SMART SPLURGES: WHERE TO INVEST WHEN DESIGNING YOUR HOME

SMART SPLURGES: WHERE TO INVEST WHEN DESIGNING YOUR HOME

Designing a home is one of those opportunities where creativity gets to intersect with daily life. Every choice - from the paint on your walls to the materials you touch each day - shapes how your home feels and functions. With over a decade working in the industry, I’ve learned what areas are worth investing in when you’re thinking about where to spend money when designing or renovating a home.

Here, I will share the things I believe are worth prioritising when creating a home that feels intentional, timeless, and deeply personal. These are the upgrades that will not only elevate your everyday living, but also add meaningful long‑term value.

QUALITY MATERIALS THAT AGE WITH GRACE

If there’s one place where investment pays off every single day, it’s in the materials you touch and see most often.

Natural stone is always at the top of my list - marble, quartzite, and even travertine bring a sense of permanence and quiet luxury that only deepens with time. Whether it’s kitchen benchtops, vanity tops, floor tiles, wall cladding, or even a statement fireplace surround, stone has a way of grounding a home. Beyond their beauty, these stones are incredibly durable and more sustainable than many engineered alternatives. They age gracefully, developing character rather than wear.

Timber has a similar effect. Solid walnut, oak, and other richly toned woods add warmth and grounding to a space. They soften the harder edges of a room and develop their own patina over the years, making them ideal for cabinetry, built‑ins, and furniture pieces that anchor a home.

And then there are the hand‑crafted details - textured tiles, artisan plaster, bespoke joinery - the elements that give a home its soul. These finishes add depth and subtle interest, the kind you don’t tire of because they’re rooted in craftsmanship rather than trend.

Whether you’re planning a refresh or a full house renovation, or just smaller cosmetic changes, choosing materials that feel good under your hands and stand the test of time is one of the most rewarding investments you can make.

WALL FINISHES THAT SET THE STONE

Your walls are the largest surface in your home, and they deserve thoughtful attention when you're trying to understand how to prioritise your home design budget.

Premium paint with richer pigments creates a depth and warmth that cheaper alternatives simply
can't replicate. Rendered finishes like French wash, stucco and Venetian plaster add texture and movement, while a beautifully chosen wallpaper can transform a room instantly. If you're considering wallpaper, always hire a qualified installer - it's one of the most expensive mistakes to undo if it's not done properly trust me.

These finishes form the foundation of your home’s atmosphere, so investing here pays dividends every single day.

LIGHTING THAT SHAPES THE MOOD

Lighting is the quiet hero of every well‑designed home - so don’t scrimp on it! Lighting shapes mood, enhances materials, and brings your home to life. I always recommend a layered approach - ambient lighting for softness, task lighting for clarity, and accent lighting to highlight art, texture, or architectural details.

When you’re choosing fixtures, think beyond looks. Consider the quality of light they cast, the spread of illumination, and how they’ll feel in the room at different times of day. Wall lights, pendants, table lamps, and floor lamps all play different roles, so mixing them creates depth and flexibility.

It’s also worth paying attention to the details that make a big difference - warm globes (nothing too cool or clinical), dimmable options for adjusting mood, and materials that complement your home’s palette. Look for well‑made fittings with good diffusion, solid construction, and finishes that will age gracefully rather than date quickly.

Whether you’re planning a renovation, exploring sustainable home design, or simply refreshing a few rooms, lighting is one of the most transformative tools you have.

INTEGRATION THAT ELEVATES THE EVERYDAY

Seamless, integrated appliances help a home feel calm and considered rather than busy. Concealed fridges, panel‑ready dishwashers, and flush cooktops allow your kitchen to read as a single, uninterrupted space - more like a beautifully designed room than a collection of machines. These choices don’t just look good; they make daily life smoother. Soft‑close mechanisms, quiet operation, and intuitive controls all add up to a home that works with you, not against you.

It’s also worth thinking beyond the kitchen. Smart details like keyless entry, integrated security systems, and thoughtful lighting control can make an enormous difference in how your home functions day to day. Technology that simplifies routines - from app‑controlled heating and cooling to automated blinds - is the kind of investment that continues to pay off long after the renovation dust has settled.

Whether you’re building new or refining what you already have, choosing integrated appliances and smart features is a subtle but powerful way to create a home that feels effortless, cohesive, and genuinely enjoyable to live in.

FURNITURE THAT SUPPORTS YOUR LIFE (AND YOUR SPINE!)

A sofa that actually supports you at the end of a long day, a dining table that quietly collects years of meals and conversations - these are the pieces truly worth investing in.

A great sofa is all about structure and comfort. Look for a kiln-dried hardwood frame (not softwood or MDF), high‑density foam or feather‑wrapped cushions that won’t sag within a year, and quality upholstery that can handle real life. The difference between a great sofa and a flimsy one is how it feels after hours of use - supportive, comfortable, and still holding its shape.

Dining furniture matters just as much. The ideal dining table height sits around 74-76 cm, paired with chairs around 45-48 cm high so you’re not perched too high or sinking too low. Solid timber or well‑constructed veneer tops will age beautifully, and chairs with proper lumbar support make long dinners far more enjoyable.

And then there’s the bed - arguably the most important piece in your home! A good bed frame with solid slats and a high‑quality mattress supports your posture, improves sleep, and genuinely affects how you feel day to day. It’s one of those investments you feel every single morning.

When you choose furniture with timeless silhouettes, durable materials, and thoughtful craftsmanship, you’re creating the foundations of how you live. These are the pieces that stay with you through trends and life changes, gathering memories and character over time.

ART & OBJECTS THAT MAKE IT YOURS

Art is one of the most powerful ways to bring personality into your home. When you invest in pieces you genuinely love, you're not just decorating - you're building a sense of history. Over time, these artwork and collected objects create a layered, lived-in feeling that reflects who you are.

If you’re just starting your art‑collecting journey, begin by exploring. Visit local galleries, weekend art shows, and design stores in person - seeing pieces up close helps you understand scale, texture, and what you’re naturally drawn to. Pair this with browsing online galleries and curated collections to widen your perspective. My own art collection is a great place to start if you’re looking for unique thoughtfully selected pieces.

The key is to trust your instincts. Start with one piece that speaks to you, then build slowly. Art has a way of grounding a space, tying your palette together, and reminding you of the moments, places, and people that matter.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Designing or renovating your home is a balance of creativity, practicality, and smart investment. Whether you're planning a refresh or starting from scratch, the key is to invest where it truly counts. Prioritise materials that last, lighting that elevates, furniture that supports your lifestyle, and finishes that set the tone. These are the choices that deliver long-term value - emotionally, functionally, and financially.

If you’re navigating the process and need guidance, book an interior design consultation with me... I would love to  help you create a home that feels deeply personal, beautifully considered, and built to last!
