Sold | Orsay Dining Set, Gae Aulenti for Knoll, 1976

$12,000.00

Gae Aulenti’s collaboration with Knoll began with two showroom designs: one in Boston (1968) and another in New York (1970).

Aulenti expanded her Knoll portfolio in 1976 with the launch of the Aulenti Collection – a comprehensive range of furniture pieces. The Orsay dining set, created during this time, is part of her contribution to modern furniture design, showcasing her distinctive approach to blending industrial materials with elegant, functional forms.

This burgundy set, sourced from a private collection, features high-gloss steel frames with leather covering the seats and tabletop.

ABOUT

Born in Italy in 1927, few designers have had as profound an impact on the world of architecture and design as Gae Aulenti. After studying architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan, she graduated in 1953, one of only two women in her class. Early in her career, Aulenti quickly established herself as a pioneering force in a field dominated by men.

Aulenti’s diverse body of work is a testament to her talent. Spanning architecture, interior design as well as object and furniture design, each project demonstrated her unique ability to blend functionality with artistic expression. Perhaps her most iconic achievement is the transformation of the Gare d'Orsay in Paris into the Musée d'Orsay, a project that forever changed the way the world views the adaptive reuse of historic buildings. In addition to architecture, her work in industrial design played a key role in promoting the global appeal of Italian design. Notable works like the Pipistrello (1965) and King Sun (1967) lamps, as well as the Locus Solus furniture series (1964), became instant icons and are still celebrated today.

Aulenti’s design philosophy was grounded in a deep respect for history, often reinterpreting traditional forms with a modern twist. She received numerous awards throughout her career, including the prestigious Compasso d'Oro, and her legacy continues to inspire designers and architects around the world.
