Vico Magistretti (1920–2006) was an influential Italian designer and architect, renowned for his contributions to modern industrial design. Born in Milan, Magistretti came from a family with a strong architectural background, and he pursued his education at the prestigious Politecnico di Milano, graduating in 1945. His early career was shaped by the post-war reconstruction of Italy, which influenced his minimalist and functional approach to design.

Magistretti's work spanned a wide range of products, from furniture and lighting to home accessories, often characterised by simplicity, practicality, and innovative use of materials. His designs reflected his deep understanding of both aesthetics and engineering, leading to objects that were not only visually striking but also highly functional and easy to produce.

Some of his most famous designs include the ‘Eclisse’ lamp (1965) for Artemide, a timeless piece that combined elegance and functionality, and the ‘Selene’ chair (1968) , also for Artemide, which demonstrated his mastery of form and ergonomics. His work with furniture brands like Cassina, De Padova, and Knoll further cemented his reputation as a leader in Italian design.

Magistretti was also known for his role in the development of the "Milanese school" of design, which emphasised modernity, rationalism, and simplicity. Magistretti's legacy endures, as his work continues to be celebrated for its clarity of vision, precision, and timeless appeal, influencing generations of designers worldwide.
