ABOUT

Brittany Ferns is an Australian artist based in Newcastle, NSW, working across painting and mixed media. Born in Sydney in 1988, her practice draws on personal narrative, cultural heritage and the textures of everyday life, resulting in works that feel both intimate and layered. 

Originally trained in textile design in Los Angeles, Ferns brings a strong material sensibility to her work. Her paintings are built through a process of layering, using linen, plaster, wax, oil paint and rice paper to create surfaces that are tactile and complex. 

Her visual language is shaped by recurring symbols and motifs, such as suns, flowers and figures, which draw on both memory and observation. A formative period spent travelling through Mexico and Guatemala further informed her approach, deepening her connection to traditional craft and hand-making processes.
